GN Elders

The Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elder's Program has become more independent recently this year. Our program coordinator is now the Elder's Program Administrator. The Program Adminstrator is under new supervision of the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Health Director of the Health and Family Services.

This year the Elder's decided as a group to go to Vancouver and attend a Canucks game and the Tribute to Elvis concert in March 2016. Prince George was too fat to travel and the weather is too hot than what they were used to.

Our LPN's will be seen more and more down at the Elder's Centre, offering more programs.

The Youth Sports and Recreation Coordinator, Vanessa Walkus also has movie nights in the Elder's Centre 3 nights a week: Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

We would like to start a cooking class very soon.

We have also started our own Good Food Program. Where all the elders get a healthy food item to use. For example: the first week was honey. Everyone received a container of honey to substitute sugar. The following week everyone received quinoa to add to their rice.

The Elder's have recently had their electinos for this years new Elder's Council. This 5 elected council are: Don Felkley, Willie Walkus, Doug Johnny, Mary V. Rufus and Mary Johnson.

The Elder's Council will be holding roles in many different Programs and Projects this year, including their own.

The Elder's have recently been approached by Grassroots to partner up for a community licensed kitchen to help develop food security. The Elder's Centre kitchen was just a bit too small for this project. So Dawn Farmer and I had gone to Roger Nopper, Band Manager. With his approval, we went to take a look at the Hall Kitchen. The hall kitchen was something that this project could work with. We are in the middle of figuring out if the venue will work for everyone that is involved with this new project.

This years grant was approved by the vote of the community. We are still waiting to receive those funds of $123,000.00.

We look forward to the many programs that are arising and coming together as the staff work on building relationships and working together for our community.

Silena George,

Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Elder's Program Administrator
