Elk Hunt

There are no Roosevelt Elk in the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw territories, therefore the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw community does not have a regular supply of elk tags and Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw community members are not allowed to hunt elk without a tag.

We are, however, allowed to apply for tags to supply elk meat to our elders. These tags are for elk in the territories of neighbouring nations such as the Kwakiutl, Cape Mudge, or Comox bands.

Any Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw members caught hunting elk without a tag will be severely punished. This illegal hunting not only threatens the fragile elk populations and potentially limits future hunts, it also disrespects our neighbouring nations and their aboriginal rights and title to their own territories. Illegal elk hunting by Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw community members may result in removal of our right to apply for elk hunting tags to get meat for our elders.
